Re “Many projects sound “great”, but they hand-wave away insanely difficult research problems that might take years to solve.” True for some projects, but there are probably many more projects that are actually not that hard to do, and for which a couple million in funding would be quite sufficient. Without even addressing the issue of merit or market potential, there currently does not seem to be any relationship at all between the difficulty of a project and the funds raised. Imagine that “blockchain” is a revolutionary new construction material. One company proposes to build a skyscraper with it, and gets $20 million in funding. Then comes a guy who wants to build a hot-dog stand with it and raises $100+ million.
